creative problem solving method

Would The Socratic Method be a good teaching tool today?
I think so. I hated High School. Educationally, it felt like 90% memorization and very little critical or creative thought was necessary.
The valedictorian and salutatorian both could memorize very well, seemingly due to being born with some good genes, but neither were encouraged to think critically, and me a B student, found them both kind of dull and not that smart (unless I wanted to ask about history of war, or how to solve a math problem, etc.).
Science and culture have never evolved due to memorizing history and facts. The true geniuses that push things forward seem to all have reasoned out WHY things happened or are the way they are with CRITICAL THOUGHT.
If you get students to present arguments vs. counter-arguments in class (as Socrates and Plato taught), they will see both sides and come to logical conclusions, and as a consequence, memorize the data involved.
Why isn’t the Socratic Method or any other “critical thinking” centered teaching used in schools?
I am an English teacher in a comprehensive school in a very poor London borough. My and I department use Socratic Dialogue all the time with all year groups. It works excellently, helping students understand the subject as they may not know which side of the argument they may be presenting, and developing their independent though processes. It teaches them to present an argument, how to use persuasive techniques… the possibilities are truly endless! Plus, the kids love it.
Our emphasis seems not to be geared toward getting the grades so much, but to helping students to learn how to learn so they can apply these techniques out of school and in their future working and personal lives.
