history of the self esteem movement

If we want to take care of our body and our health it means we must take a preventative approach and provide what is necessary for our body to remain healthy and well. Proper exercise is the essential foundations of a healthy lifestyle and it works by improving and maintaining the strength, capacity and vitality of the human body.
Thanks to technology and mechanization our modern day lifestyles are devoid of anything that resembles the ‘work’ our ancestors did on a daily basis to survive. There is nothing vigorous in our day anymore to keep the human body strong which causes us to lose our precious muscle tissue at the rate of one half pound per year after the mid 20′s. This rate doubles after age 50.
Because our muscle tissue functions as the engine or powerhouse of the body keeping it strong contributes to improvements in our work, our favorite sports and hobbies, and our general day-to-day activities. Both our physical appearance and our physical performance can be improved by the gain of muscle tissue or hampered by the loss of muscle tissue.
Muscle tissue loss has a massive effect on the state of our health and the quality of our life. The reason why people become slower and fatter as they get older is simply that over the years their muscle tissue has decreased through inactivity. This sends their physical performance and metabolism (the body’s engine) into a downward spiral not only becoming less efficient but exposing one to increased disease risk.
We do not have to let this happen but we need to take some action and practice some ‘self care’ if we hope to stop or even reverse this process. And the way we do that is to implement a proper strength training program to prevent this muscle tissue wasting.
One of the most important benefits of strength training and obtaining stronger muscles is increased physical performance. You will find every day chores and activities easier and you will be able to remain more independent and self sufficient as you get older.
Another wonderful benefit of a good strength training program is its effect on your appearance and body composition (muscle/fat ratio), which can directly influence self-esteem, self-worth, and level of confidence and pride in yourself. When you look better and feel better you become more accepting and happier with your lot in life.
We must ignore the issue that society approves and even encourages people to slow down and become less active as they get older. As the muscles weaken, movement becomes more difficult and people gradually become sedentary and dependent on others for even the most basic of day to day activities.
There is no reason why we can’t be physically, mentally, and socially active and live a healthy, strong, vibrant life until the day we die. But make no mistake it has to be worked at and will not happen on its own.
The evidence continues to mount; strength training exercise is the proverbial fountain of youth for every adult. Everyday a new study is released touting this special type of exercise as the youth elixir – a claim that cannot be held by any other type of activity especially long slow steady state activity like walking, jogging or cycling.
Although these activities are great as part of an active lifestyle they can never stop muscle tissue loss and therefore can never replace a proper exercise program. Science and medicine are proving one thing is for certain, staying strong and active delays the aging process allowing us to preserve our youth for longer.
